Job Summary
As a Research Associate, the individual is responsible for oversight of project objectives, research on disaster and climate aspects relevant to DRR projects, work closely with DRR and CCA Experts, Team Leads, and other team members, and support in the overall implementation of projects. The Research Associate will guarantee that the DRR and climate aspects are given sufficient consideration for hazard mapping, risk assessments, vulnerability and capacity mapping, and analysis under the guidance of thematic experts.
Individuals with an interest in DRRM and proven experience in DRR project research and coordination, particularly at the local level, are highly encouraged to apply. Previous experience of working in DRR and CCA projects is an added value.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Collect and compile reports, publications, and datasets relevant to disaster and climate in digital or hardcopy formats from different government bodies, disaster portals, and other sources.
Assess existing data, identify data gaps and coordinate with thematic experts to finalize the DRR and climate data and parameters required for risk analysis and computation.
Review of methodologies/approaches and formulae for risk assessment and vulnerability calculations and devise a standard approach for the project in coordination with and guidance of the Team Lead.
Identify vulnerability indicators across four major thematic sectors (Physical, Social, Economical, and Environmental) that guide the development of questionnaires for survey data collection.
Support Team Lead and the technical team at NAXA in conducting field activities that shall include sensitization, training, and capacity development workshops as planned in the project timeline.
Maintaining documentation of all field-based activities, workshops, and meeting minutes.
Support the Team Lead and Data Analyst to check the quality of data obtained from field activities.
Compile reports (field visit reports, update reports, data assessment, and analysis reports) and other relevant documents from thematic experts and assist the project team in the preparation of final reports and knowledge products.
Support the GIS team at NAXA in the development of GIS-based map products and databases.
Assist the Team Lead in the identification and assessment of risk financing strategies based on both the primary and secondary datasets obtained during the project implementation. This is to recommend the local government bodies, partner organizations, and relevant agencies with appropriate risk financing programs that support the vulnerable households and communities in the project locations.
Participate in regular meetings with the Team Lead, thematic experts, and technical team to ensure the smooth execution of project activities.
Other duties as assigned by the Team Lead.
Required Skills
Sound knowledge of research methodologies.
Good interpersonal, cross-culture communication skills, proactive and self-motivated.
Excellent written and verbal communication reflecting directly on the documents, presentations, and communication.
Excellent writing skills in both Nepali and English.
Intrinsic motivation in Research and Analytical works related to DRR/M.
Good knowledge of geospatial data handling tools and methods (GIS, QGIS, OpenStreetMap) would be an added advantage.
Analytical mindset.
Able to multitask and meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills.
Education: Master’s Degree in DRM, Earth Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Crisis Management, Climate Change, Urban Planning, or related disciplines with a specialization in DRR.
Required Qualification and Experience:
At least 1 year of demonstrated knowledge of DRR, resilience, and adaptation.
Possess a deep understanding of vulnerability and risk assessment.
Willing to travel outside the valley for field-based assignments.
Good understanding of and experience in operationalizing disaster management-related acts, policies, strategies, guidelines, and alike.
Experience in the preparation of DRM materials and tools and familiarity with Nepal Government’s DRM-related matters and technological tools.
Scientific Research and Publications related to DRRM and Risk Assessment will be an added advantage.
