JOB DESCRIPTION: COMMUNITY MOBILIZER
I - Organization context
Samyukta Safai Jagaran (SASAJA) is a non-governmental, non-profit making,
non-political organization established by groups of informal waste workers in
2014. SASAJA focuses on the recognition, rights, occupational health and
safety, and advocacy for Informal Waste Workers (IWWs). SASAJA wants to
advocate to the government, especially on recognizing their contribution to
waste management, government trust funds for IWWs, ensuring health and safety,
and access to social health insurance.
SASAJA, in collaboration with a trusted international partner, is implementing
a project for the protection of the environment and promotion of the health of
informal waste workers and people of the slum areas of Kathmandu and Sisdole.
SASAJA is especially responsible for the overall implementation of the project
which is to Mitigate environmental factors affecting the health of exposed
vulnerable populations of waste workers and urban slum areas in Nepal, Support
the local government in the promotion of a resilient health system providing
quality healthcare services and health equity in Nepal through advocacy in
Kathmandu Valley and Sisdole landfill site of Kakani Rural Municipality.
SASAJA will contribute to ensuring that waste workers’ and slum peoples’
health issues are better addressed within the health care system, wellbeing,
and institutional linkage. Through the project, SASAJA identifies the target
groups and aims to support them with different activities to mitigate
Environmental and Occupational Risks and improve access to health care through
the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme and other health and environmental
interventions.
II- Main aims of the post
The Community Mobilizer is responsible for community mobilization in the
field to implement the project activities with communities. The Community
Mobilizer works in close coordination with the SASAJA project coordinator and
the project team.
Hierarchical positioning: Reporting directly to the Project Coordinator
of SASAJA.
Main responsibilities:
Community mobilization and project implementation
- Participate actively in conducted trainings, workshops, and meetings.
- Compliance with the Community Mobilization guidelines of this project.
- Actively participate in the mapping of Informal Waste Workers (IWWs) and people of slums involved in Kathmandu Valley/Kakani Rural Municipality and outreach activities and assist in collecting information for KAP surveys, qualitative research, periodic updates/assessments, and final survey.
- To communicate and orient the community about the objectives of the project and organization.
- To manage the local level meeting, group discussion, and orientation for the activities as per the project objective in coordination with the supervisor.
- Support IWWs and people of slums for active participation in meetings, BCC sessions, health camps, orientation, and training.
- Support, supervision, and monitoring of IWW’s non-profit enterprise leaders regarding registration and well-functioning
- Support PC to conduct a capacity assessment of leaders.
- Support PC to conduct various capacity-building trainings for leaders and members of IWW non-profit enterprises.
- To conduct and support managing all regular group meetings, coordination meetings, and training at the field level.
- To support IWWs and slum people for accessibility of health services through NHI.
- Conduct various demand-generation activities at the community level for utilization of local health services.
- Coordination and collaboration with local stakeholders for effective planning and implementation of project activities.
- To conduct orientation and training on Behavior Change Communication awareness sessions and waste management campaigns in the communities.
- Implement waste management promotion events at wards level and different community groups that involve 3R and waste segregation training.
- To help facilitate and conduct public hearings and social audits in the communities.
- To coordinate the local stakeholders such as ward chairperson, members, ward secretariat, schools authorities, health post authorities, political parties, and other waste management-related organizations in the concerned wards.
- Develop strategic action plan and pre & post questionnaires for BCC orientations
Communication and Reporting
- Report to Project Coordinator on all issues related to progress and achievement in the field
- Collect information and produce quality reports, case stories, and photos and keep proper data records and other related documents.
- To submit the regular report on events, on a monthly, quarterly, and trimester basis as per the requirement of the project.
- To perform the work as per the rules and regulations of the organization he/she has to be in contact with the organization at any time.
- Close coordination with all the partners, stakeholders, and beneficiaries of this project.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Collect relevant project data and records as per the donor requirements.
- Follow the project M&E mechanism and handle the issues that may arise
- Create and share case stories of best practices every month.
Education and qualification
The candidate should possess at least a proficiency Certificate in General
Medicine, (BPH preferred) with at least 2 years of professional experience in
the related field.

One position based in Kathmandu
Project duration: Three months initially.
