Communication Intern
Healthy Waste Workers for Sustainable Waste Management (HWW4SWM)

2022 in Kathmandu

Context:

Samyukta Safai Jagaran (SASAJA) is a non-governmental, non-profit making, non-political organization established by the groups of informal waste workers in 2014. SASAJA focuses on the recognition, rights and advocacy for IWWs. SASAJA want to advocate to the government especially on recognizing their contribution to waste management, government trust funds for IWWs and access to social health insurance. SASAJA is providing monthly education to their group members focusing in savings and credit and solid waste management.

SASAJA in collaboration with Green Path Nepal (GPN) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is implementing “ Healthy Waste Workers for Sustainable Waste Management ” project funded and technically supported by Médecins du Monde- France (MdM-F), Nepal Mission.

This project has three main expected outcomes:

  1. Formalization of IWWs through non-profit enterprises and increasing their recognition in integrated solid waste management in urban cities
  2. Increase risk mitigation and promotion of decent safe work opportunities in current activities and through innovation
  3. Increase access to quality health services for IWWs and the community through promotion of Urban Health Promotion Centre

The HWW4SWM program has been set up in partnership with 4 local stakeholders:

  • Kathmandu Metropolitan City , responsible of urban health facilities
  • Kakani Municipality , responsible of the Sisdol health facility
  • Samyukta Safai Jagaran (SASAJA) , an IWWs’ cooperative experienced in IWWs mobilization, peer education and microfinance
  • Green Path Nepal , specialized in developing innovative waste management projects based on public-private partnerships, including harmful and toxic waste management.

For the overall project visibility and outreach, the communication intern is deemed necessary to plan, implement and increase the outreach of the HWW4SWM Project of Kathmandu.

Key objectives of the Intern:

The main objective of this assignment is to provide support to design and implement a communication strategy, tools, and contents for the Nepal mission of Médecins du Monde; articulating key messages for regional, national, and international media coverage. The strategic plan shall promote Médecins du Monde actions in Nepal and its partners/stakeholders, in line with the headquarters’ communication guidelines. This will be implemented through a range of activities and communication channels including digital and social media, and the press. Therefore, the communication intern should set the following key objectives:

  • Working across the organization to identify success stories and case studies that are engaging and motivating, which communicate impact and showcase Médecins du Monde’s projects and contribute to local advocacy.
  • Identifying opportunities for creating and delivering inspiring and attractive multi-media content and particularly on social media channels.
  • Supporting Country Office with the creation and delivery of communications activities, such as articles, case studies, blogs, project videos/photos, and events.

Expected deliverables and responsibilities of the Intern:

The lists of deliverables/responsibilities for the Communication Intern are as follows:

Under the direct supervision of the Program team, the Communication Intern will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision and shall carry out the following tasks;

  • Provide support to work for the Social Media platform to tag content and analyse its performance to prepare analytics and content reports capturing national trends, feedback from followers, social listening, opportunities, and challenges and social media accounts performance;
  • Monitor and coordinate materials, schedules, facilities, and clearances, and provide support for special events and projects, including attending relevant fora held by MdM, partners,and Government in Kathmandu.
  • Under clear guidance, prepare creative and fun video concepts for traditional and social media platforms and networks, as well as printed materials to enhance coverage and support of MdM’s activities, ensuring consistency with messages and standards.
  • Engage with the Facebook, TikTok and Instagram community daily
  • Manage and maintain records and databases, such as of beat journalist and the contact list of media outlets, ensuring the information is accurate, organized and readily available for access by the program team.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Provide support to map social media influencers and identify opportunities to partner with at least 1 influencer to promote MdM’s campaigns;
  • Provide end of assignment self- reports on project actions, results and opportunities.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
  • Public Service Announcements (PSA) activities

Required Competencies

The qualifications and/or specialized knowledge/experience required are:

Required education:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent;

Area(s) of specialisation:

Communications, Journalism, International Development, Public Health or any other relevant field;

Language :

Fluent in English and Nepali languages

Required skills and experience:

  • Communication is desired;
  • Motivated to contribute towards development sectors and to serve others;
  • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;
  • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;
  • Flexible and open to learning and new experiences;
  • Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and other)

Note:

The deliverables can be revised based on team discussion with the Intern.
